Are you a constructivist, or an instructivist? The former can be considered to be promoters of hazy cosmic jive, or a truly humanistic approach to learning. The latter can be viewed as an authoritarian environment, or the result of integrating evidence-based approaches. What, exactly, are they? How do they differ? Is one superior to the other? This dichotomy is important, because people have come down strongly on one side or the other. At stake is the learning experiences we create for our audiences. What approach should we be taking? In this debate, we’ll have two informed advocates looking to create clarity.
Paul Kirschner is one of the most recognized researchers in educational psychology and co-author of a landmark article advocating for direct instruction.
On the opposing side is Clark Quinn, who’s written books on making learning engaging and effective, using environments and learner exploration. They’ll look to make clear what we’re talking about and establish the two different views. Can we find common ground? Or is one side doomed to failure? Come for the fireworks, come for the learnings, but come!
