THE BUILDING LEADERSHIP CAPABILITY SERIES with Nigel Paine and Matt Richter

THE BUILDING LEADERSHIP CAPABILITY SERIES with Nigel Paine and Matt Richter

from $150.00

12 Sessions: 12 Leadership Tools (At Least!)

Leadership is a vague idea. We all think we know it when we see it. We all definitely know when it is missing. But, what is leadership… practically speaking? How does one develop leadership? How does one develop oneself to become a leader, or a better leader? And given the challenges and problems all organizations and communities face daily, how does the function of leadership fit into needed solutions.

BUILDING LEADERSHIP CAPABILITY is about how one can approach the complex problems of today and solve them—or at least attempt to solve them—tomorrow. And if we are really honest, prescriptions provided in traditional leadership development initiatives work like a broken clock—they are only right twice a day, if they are lucky to be right at all. What worked yesterday likely won’t work tomorrow. The knowledge and skills Tom exhibited during a crisis won’t get his firm out of trouble once out of the crisis. In other words, leadership is a moving target. It is contextual. It is the epitome of hubris that anyone can claim to develop tomorrow’s leaders. Yet every consultant, former CEO, actor, and politician is an expert on what it takes not only to lead today, but to lead tomorrow.

Nigel and Matt are arrogant. Just ask their families. But they do not believe they have a secret formula. Nor do they accept there is a secret (or known) formula. Rather, they advocate that leadership is a function and not a person. And that function, that role, morphs with the situations and context in hand.

The 12-month series will not make you a better leader. It will not presume to teach leadership. No… it is about the peripheral. It is about building your capabilities to solve those problems… those wicked problems… that require the function of leadership. BUILDING LEADERSHIP CAPABILITY will address many of the tools, the models, the theories that become the apparatuses for solving those complex problems… at systematic levels.

More About the Program

Take one session. Take three sessions. Take them all. It’s up to you. Live online, all interactive sessions will provide content related to the topic, activities and simulations, and discussions. Sessions will be recorded for participants, as well.

This is leadership development in context. A phrase you will hear so frequently, you may want to plug your ears eventually.😁  It is also systems thinking. It is risk management. It is strategic problem solving. It is also about you and your overall presence and mindset during a crisis. Anyway, in context is the only way you will modify your behavior and enhance your own impact.

SESSION OVERVIEWS

SESSION 1: THURSDAY, JUNE 13, 2024: What is Leadership? What is Leadership Development? Oh My!.

The session introduces the concept of leadership and presents several of the inherent problems traditional leadership development faces (causes). Then we explore several cases from large organizations as a kicking off-point to identify how context both affects and is affected by leadership. Finally, we propose that leadership is not a single person, but a functional role that may or may not be filled by multiple people in the organization at different times. We will give you a model for contextual leadership, as well as a four-column checklist for thinking about leadership development.

SESSION 2: THURSDAY, July 11, 2024: Problems… Problems… Problems…

We keep referencing the complexity of what must be led. That many of the issues you face can feel overwhelming, impossible, and even scary. That’s where the work of the great Keith Grint comes into the picture. Keith has a wonderful model about the different types of problems we face in organizations. And that one type of problem requires leadership. This session will get into the nuance about those wicked problems and the leadership approach to take.

SESSION 3: THURSDAY, AUGUST 15, 2024: How to Increase Your Personal Effectiveness

We begin with the basics… Most are unaware of the impact they make (positive or negative) the moment they step in the room, or the moment they press send on an email. Heck, sometimes that little, offside comment will cause a maelstrom! Enhancing awareness is the first step, and conscious actions to build your personal effectiveness are the next step. This session will help you be more effective individually, in your team, and in your organization. Everyone can make changes to be more effective and more self-aware; this session will highlight a number of key tasks and processes where you can improve rapidly.

SESSION 4: THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2024: Creating a More Intrinsically and Meaningful Work Environment

This session explores how can we provide the structure, the purpose & meaning, and the sense of belonging for those around us as we engage teams toward solving complex or wicked problems (or opportunities). In other words, how do we influence the environment motivationally to support the needs of those around us so they authentically work together with us to solve the problems we face.

SESSION 5: THURSDAY, OCTOBER 10, 2024: Organizational Learning

Hey— this is a leadership program? Why are we talking about learning? Because leadership is ultimately about solving complex problems or realizing complex opportunities. Organizational learning is how we leverage the company as a system for continuous learning to better equip ourselves, increase efficiency, and maximize the likelihood for success.

SESSION 6: THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 14, 2024 (13h00 to 17h00 ET (New York time)): Systems Thinking

How do we do that? By getting functional leaders—you—  to think about cause and effect. To get you to explore nuance and how all these different factors come together to get you where you are and where you are going. We will look at toilets, sewage systems, and toilet paper… all excellent platforms for learning how systems work, and how complex systems affect all around us.

SESSION 7: THURSDAY, DECEMBER 19, 2024 (13h00 to 17h00 ET (New York time)): Action Learning

Again… with that learning thing…? Yep! This is about working with your peers to solve problems and commit to new behaviors. This is also about building practice and reflection into what you do. Why? So, you can find what works and what doesn’t as quickly as you can. So you can put into practice solutions, adjusting them as needed. Action learning is all about being agile and nimble is a complex world.

SESSION 8: THURSDAY, JANUARY 16, 2025: Change

Unfortunately, we are too often burdened by those pesky humans who must, or better yet, willingly, follow leaders. To get them aligned… and to get them so in a more intrinsic way— a self-determined way— we must put change management practices in place. This session provides such processes. Because emotions matter. Change is ever present. Some good. Some bad. Some unseen. But, given your responsibilities, you must find ways to make change more amenable to those around you. How…? We have a few ideas.

SESSION 9: THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 13, 2025: Organizational Politics

Politics is defined as two or more people “in a room.” Politics is agnostic. It is essential. It is how we humans engage. By itself, it is neither good, nor bad. But it certainly can yield bad things and be amoral, or moral. In other words, there is an ethical component to politics. This session looks at the more Machiavellian side of the leadership algorithm. No… this session is not “how to manipulate others…” But, it could be. Heh, heh, heh…

SESSION 10: THURSDAY, MARCH 13, 2025: Increasing your Presence in the Organization

Many leaders imagine that speaking the loudest or most often is the best way to increase their impact on those around them. This is exerting hard power. Why don’t they listen to me?!? People have to listen! Am I chopped liver? However, you will have most impact by exercising the soft power that you build rather than assume. This session will encourage you to think hard about your presence and devise a strategy to be more impactful and acknowledged in your community. This will take account of the context that you operated within. Find out how you balance soft and hard power. Work out a personal strategy to increase your presence. Make sure that you are fully seen!

SESSION 11: THURSDAY, APRIL 10, 2025: Risk Management

A risk is simply a potential problem. We will explore the different types of risks you may encounter. We will also give you a risk management tool for categorizing and identifying different risks, as well as a set of strategies for identifying as many of them as possible. We will analyze risks from the perspective of their potential impact, as well as their respective likelihood to happen. You will leave this session wondering why you weren’t a worry wart before! And also realizing how good risk management actually makes life less stressful.

SESSION 12: THURSDAY, MAY 15, 2025: Action Planning

How do you create a plan of action for leadership in your organization? Whether it is taking what you have learned here and applying it, or putting together an action plan to specifically reconcile a problem you face, this session is all about strategic and tactical planning. And remember, planning isn’t everything! You have to be ready to throw the plan away and improvise… So, a bit of improvisation is included, as well. At the end of this session, you will have an action planning tool you can use for your own leadership initiatives, or for any initiative you manage or lead.
