The Motivation Blueprint is a design and implementation manual for managers and leaders — a practical, evidence-informed guide for creating work environments where people genuinely want to contribute and are equipped to perform. Grounded in Self-Determination Theory, one of the most rigorously researched frameworks in motivational psychology, the book addresses the full range of what leaders actually do: setting goals, delivering feedback, managing performance appraisals, navigating difficult conversations, and establishing expectations that people can own rather than simply comply with. It cuts through decades of myths about incentives, engagement, behavior change, and more to explain why so many well-intentioned initiatives underdeliver and what to do instead.
The book operates at two levels simultaneously. At the operational level, it provides checklists, frameworks, scenarios, and diagnostic tools that managers can apply immediately to support the three basic psychological needs all humans share: autonomy, competence, and relatedness. At the systems level, it examines how those same needs are shaped by organizational processes, power dynamics, politics, ethics, trust, DEI, and psychological safety. Whether the context is a one-on-one conversation or an institutional policy, the question is always the same: does the system design support or undermine the conditions under which people flourish?
Across real workplace cases and practical frameworks, The Motivation Blueprint helps leaders understand that the quality of motivation matters more than its quantity, and that durable performance comes from environments built to support it. This is the atlas… a blueprint… for everything a manager and leader should consider, do, and ultimately master.

This book has quickly become my Swiss army knife for my work (HR researcher, trainer, ethicist). Whatever the workplace matter, I know this book will cover it–and it does so in a way that is thoroughly researched (read: trustworthy), relevant, and practical. It is absolutely packed with solid insights on the costly reality and crucial prevention of motivational bankruptcy. Also, it’s really rich in eloquent, inspiring aphorisms (If you’re into those like I am). For those interested in motivation science, management, feedback, and the general nature of modern life’s workplace challenges (and opportunities!), this book is as much of a treasure chest-toolbox as any book can be.

I had the privilege of having Matt as a professor at EMLyon business school during my Executive MBA, and The Motivation Blueprint is the natural extension of his inspiring classes, building powerful bridges between theory and practice. This book provides all the keys to truly grasp the foundations of Self-Determination Theory, understand the motivation continuum, and appreciate the importance of structure, autonomy support, and involvement as powerful forces and essential conditions to shape motivation. Reading it, I felt I was happily back in class. With its crystal-clear language and concrete examples, the book makes complex concepts accessible and offers a practical guide for anyone who wants to better understand how to motivate and be motivated.

This book is a must for anyone working in L&D, or education. As roles and portfolios continue to expand and diversify, it’s becoming more vital to find a common thread that connects what we’re actually trying to achieve as learning professionals. SDT is that thread, and The Motivation Blueprint does a fantastic job of grounding years of research into a practical roadmap for designing learning that not only sticks, but is meaningful.
What stood out most to me is how the pillars of SDT are essential to a well-functioning learning ecosystem, ensuring we don’t just focus on learning but consider the broader system as a whole.
I genuinely wish I had this book earlier in my career. It would have helped shape my thinking and design work much sooner, especially in grounding learning in purpose and meaning in a more intentional way.
